Substantial Online Failure Affects Many Websites and Apps

A widespread web outage has disrupted dozens online platforms and mobile apps worldwide, and users noting problems getting online due to difficulties at the online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted platforms comprise the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, along with multiple Amazon-operated services like its main retail platform and the Ring security device manufacturer.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was impacted along with its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were additional accounts of difficulties reaching the the tax authority site on the start of the week. Additionally in Britain, several Ring device owners turned to online platforms to report their doorbells were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of issues on specific apps totaled the thousands for each platform.

Officials confirmed that the issue began in the east coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a unit that supplies essential online framework for numerous companies, who lease resources on AWS infrastructure. AWS is the most extensive web hosting platform.

Shortly after late night (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), the company announced “elevated problem frequencies and slowdowns” for AWS services in a region on the eastern US of the US. The ripple effect appeared to affect apps around the world, with the Downdetector site indicating outages with the same sites in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a service that reports on web disruptions, further indicated a surge in issues on the start of the week, with many of them situated in the state of Virginia, the region of the eastern US data center where AWS said the outage started.
